Most travelers dread the idea of a layover, but in reality, it’s all about how you choose to perceive it. For the optimist, a layover is really more like a free upgrade to your trip; at no additional cost, you get the chance to check another city off your list and explore somewhere new! Read on to explore a few ways to make the most out of your next layover, whether it’s one hour or eight hours long.
Explore the City
Depending on how much time you’ve got to burn, consider renting a reliable shuttle (such as a High Desert Shuttle) and travel outside the airport limits. Even if you only have a few hours, that’s enough time to make some cultural stops or even see some famous landmarks. For instance, LAX is pretty close to the Venice Boardwalk, which has all kinds of stuff to see and do for people of all ages.
Keep Kids Entertained
Speaking of “all ages,” what if you have kids with you? This is where people fear layovers can be downright terrible. However, there are some ways (aside from giving them your tablet) to keep your kids entertained during a layover. Consider watching planes take off and land with them and learn about how airplanes work. Or, create a fun airport scavenger hunt and supervise them while they compete to see who can find all the items on the list first.
Go to the VIP Lounge
Did you know that many airports have VIP lounges that you can pay extra to enjoy? These lounges often come complete with a bar area and even some comfortable places to relax and nap. So, if you have a longer layover, paying the extra money to have access to one of these lounges can be worth it — especially since they help you feel like you’re not in an airport at all.
