Whether you’re traveling to or from destinations like Victorville, Adelanto, and other High Desert locations, if you are a nervous flier, it may not matter how many times you have made the trip. Even though flying is the safest way to travel, anxiety can kick in at any time before or during a flight. However, there are several things you can do to calm your nerves in the sky.
Remember That Turbulence Doesn’t Equal Danger
Turbulence can feel uncomfortable, but planes just don’t drop out of the sky due to bumpy flights. Turbulence simply indicates clouds or other atmospheric conditions and are a normal part of flying. Warnings to remain seated with your seatbelt fastened are not because a plane crash is imminent but because the flight staff does not want you to fall and injure yourself or another passenger.
Watch the Flight Attendants
In fact, keeping an eye on the flight staff during turbulence can tell you all you need to know. Do they look worried? You’ll notice that they are going about their business and not panicking, so neither should you.
Have Distractions On Hand
Whether music, movies, games, books or some other form of entertainment keeps you occupied and distracted, be sure to plan ahead to bring it along. Try to do some research ahead of time about what is offered in-flight as well. For example, some airlines may have in-flight entertainment you can access using your personal devices, but you need to first download an app before leaving the gate. Charge up your electronic devices beforehand and consider bringing a backup power source in case it is not possible to recharge on the plane.
Eat and Drink Sensibly
You might be tempted to hit the alcohol and comfort food pretty hard in order to calm yourself down, but you will feel better if you eat and drink sensibly. Staying hydrated is important as well, so never turn down beverage service as it comes around.
Book an Airport Shuttle
Knowing that you have transportation at both ends can help relieve the additional anxiety of dealing with driving and parking at your departure airport and of how to get to your destination at your arrival airport.
